Pickering - The Latest and Update-ist
It's been a while since an update.
-After the Durham Meadoway open house, a survey came out which included 'use of skateboards & Scooters' as modes of transport. It also included questions about using the trail to get to skateparks and having skatable features on the trail.
- The pesky stones that were placed next to the West Shore Skate Spot were removed and asphalt was laid, proving advocacy works and the city should have listened to me in the first place.
- We did a spring clean-up of the WSSS and picked 91lbs of trash. A lot but less than half of the previous years 200. As a thanks, Red Dragon Skate sent the clean up crew decks! Show up next year😜.
- Whitby is getting a new Skatepark and Pump Track at the new Community Centre. ETA 2025
-Pefferlaw is also getting a Pump Track with a small Skate Spot (it's under construction as of Sept 27).
-Newcastle Community Park (where the skatepark is) is being finished. Initially, the Town had said they would be closing the skatepark but the park appears to still be in use.
- Lastly, The West Shore Skate Spot is having a mural done in October so some touch-up were done to the Spot. The Artist, Fatspatrol, has just released her concept and it's amazing. I have some concerns I've forwarded to the city but I'm excited to see this project come to life. However, the skate spot will be closed while Fats works on the mural. Show some respect. Stay off the spot. Bring the artist drinks and snacks. Unveiling is planned for Oct 20.
- Other Bits - The ground is cleared in Seaton for a future park that is supposed to have a skatepark. The Main Pickering Skatepark is still in early planning stages but due to location, it may be a plaza. Don't scoot off roofs. Free Teen Stuff pooped the bed and did not hold any skate comps this summer, despite having 2 parks. Both Alexandria and St Mary's are getting additions to their parks as we speak(sept 2023).
Keep in touch at Pickering Skateparks Alliance on IG.
I've been busy with my own project but I'm still actively advocating!
