At well over 20 years old, Iceland Skatepark may be undergoing some changes in the near future. The city was vague as to the full scope of the project. One post said refurbishment, another said replacement. Most locals (& myself) were not stoked on the idea as we didn't feel like the park was that bad. I made some recommendations in a letter you can check out HERE. I've since been back and I'm more on board with the idea of replacement. While it is a great 'Era Park', the wear and tear, bad construction choices and basic bowl have me thinking it's time to give it a major overhaul and update it while keeping the old character.
* Era Park - a skatepark built in the late 90's/early 2000's that's great for the time, still has life and can be enjoyed as is. eg - Chatham, Oakville's Shell Park
VFA Parks - Same Era, built by Victor Ford & Associates but generally terrible. eg OG Mold-master, OG Pickering.
These rails are terrible and there's patch and shaved down cracks all over the park.
The basic bowl needs way too many touch-ups
Years of plowed snow and Zamboni ice have been dumped onto the park.
This is the only flat ledge. There's no flat bar. All the quarters are 5ft. 2 of the hubbas are 20 inches tall.
If the city is putting up the cash, I say let them. Rebuild of the OG design with some minor tweaks (lower one of the tall hubbas), modernize the bowl and add a learners zone with core obstacles and a small QP.
Garrett circa 2006
