Pickering Parks Master Plan & Input Session Follow Up

Pickering Parks Master Plan
& Input Session Follow Up

The City of Pickering is holding two public input sessions at the Pickering Recreation Centre on January 31st. Times are 3-5pm & 6-8pm.
If you can't make it, the department is also accepting written comments and have posted some quick feedback questions at the link below.

Pickering is in great need of additional and updated skateparks and skatespots. Every skater I know travels outside of the city for better terrain.
As I said in my speech to City Council, Pickering was progressive when it built a skatepark in 1999 but a lot has changed. It's time to catch up.

There is now a petition started by Spencer Torok of Pickering.
HELP GET PICKERING A NEW SKATEPARK

...& Input Session Follow Up
The first public input session was well attended by skaters and skatepark advocates (mostly parents who are tired of driving to Ajax & Markham with their kids). It was about a 50-50 split of skatepark people and all other park users. we quickly filled the board with ideas and links to this blog and the petition. There were many requests for Pickleball Courts (a low impact version of tennis that is popular with older people) and splash pads, both of which I'd like to see in community parks along skate spots.

As you can see, the skatepark strategy section filled up fast. I wasn't able to attend the second session that day but the boards were place at the Rec. Complex Family Day event which had a large turnout, and being a holiday, had a greater variety of responses.

Looks like people want a multi-use skatepark with lights and one kid wants to jump over a pool. Good for you, kid!
